RE-SOCIALIZATION-JAMAICA’S JOURNEY
Re-socialisation in the Jamaican context is all about inculcating values, morals, discipline and respect for self others and the environment. We want to go back to first principles of common courtesy, hygiene, deportment, manners and generally good behaviour to take back our country....
In fact this was how we were socialized before the word "modern" took on a new meaning .We want back people of character and integrity and children who do not lose their childhood prematurely because of a warped culture which have been imposed on them. We need to bring back the value and civic pride in honestly working and earning. We need to be reminded of what caring for each other is all about. We need to be our brother’s keeper and we need to get back to the days when community leaders and institutions were the moral compass of our society.
There are several factors which determine the need for re-socialization in the Jamaican context.
Some of the dynamic are noted as:
(1) Cultural transition; rural to urban area, migration to new country, career shift, and shift in social status;
(2) Critical social interaction, socio-political conflict, social institutionalization (education) ,community and social interactions, peer pressure, anti-social experiences and brainwashing (technological, entertainment and media);
(3) Personal experience : Physical development, physical accident, family loss, prolonged illness , incarceration, responsibility shift, religious experience, and age realization employment or loss or lack of employment.
Re-socialization: Restorative education, general rehabilitation of the de-motivated, influencing “mindsets” and training the hard-core anti-social and usually unemployed are all forms of re-socialization. Re-socialization programs assume that morals, values, attitudes, and ability can be permanently altered as a result of outside intervention.
The importance of re-socialization for our Jamaican society cannot be overstated at this time as the adopted cultures now threaten the existence of the masses from physical, emotional, economic and environmental degradation. This, evidenced by the very high murder rates, abuse ,assault on our most vulnerable, women and children, the waste disposal systems, the lack of respect displayed for self and others and the outright disregard for the environment and in a general way, law and order.
These maladies coupled with engrained corruption and waste have all affected the moral and productive capacity of the country as we battle with significant economic challenges which has all but crippled the government’s ability to provide sustainable effective service in all sectors of the society. The magnitude of the problem has prompted this call for us as a people to re-evaluate our positions and reprogram and re-engineer our socioeconomic and political system to reverse the trends and reposition our social order to bring relief to our emotionally hardened, over taxed, criminalized, and poverty stricken population.
This effort calls for an immediate de-socialization of our practices with the likewise immediate transition to a position friendly to creating and implementing programs and projects aligned with a new paradigm for inculcating the new and more gentle, kinder and friendly Jamaica that we all desire and yearn for in a comprehensive, practical and efficient re-socialization program. Unite Jamaica People as advocates for this comprehensive program recognize that for something of this nature to be successful it will require a full buy in of all Jamaicans who are stakeholders in the process.
This program should by necessity be inclusive of the political parties yet divorced from political and governmental control. The project should be executed by an independent third party with no political affiliation or vested interest in any benefit from any area of intervention.
Critical areas to be impacted are the home and family, all socio-political and civic institutions, private sector and industry groupings, religious organizations, communities and community organizations, the education system and the criminal and justice systems.
UJP Propose the establishment of a Re-Socialization secretariat to plan, execute and operationalize the overall re-socialization program and implement the projects which will be required to sustain the initiative.
Much stake holder consultation and organization need to be undertaken for the holistic development of this program, however, we can certainly start to inoculate and infect those with whom we come in contact with courtesies and small mind changing habits while we roll out the more impacting projects.
Please join us in advocating for and promoting this re-socialization campaign for a gentler, kinder more respectful and productive Jamaica.
